A Reason, A Season…
Every so often, someone crosses our path for what may seem like only a brief season, yet the imprint they leave behind lasts far longer than the time we shared.
In just two weeks, I have felt called to celebrate two influential people who have touched my life in powerful ways. I knew each of them for less than a few years, yet their dynamic energy, presence, and authenticity made a difference — both for me and for many others.
They were very different people, each with a unique path, purpose, and personality. Yet both carried a profound presence. Each reminded me that the impact we have on another person’s life isn’t measured solely by how long we know them; it’s also shaped by the truth, integrity, and energy we bring to the relationship.
Major John
Last week, I had the honor of reflecting on the life of John, a celebrated Air Force officer who was instrumental in laying the foundations for our military medical system. John was interred at Arlington National Cemetery by his beloved wife, who has become a dear and cherished friend. If you have never been to Arlington, you may consider visiting. It is the third-largest arboretum in the United States, with the most profoundly beautiful trees and grounds.
What struck me most about John was his extraordinary level of honesty, integrity, curiosity, and directness. He was not someone who accepted surface-level answers. He asked questions. He challenged assumptions. He looked beyond the obvious and encouraged others to do the same.
The Gift of Curiosity
John was one of the people who inspired me to think more out of the box.
His insatiable quest for answers stimulated ways of thinking I had never considered. He caused me to pause, reflect, question, and look beyond what was immediately visible. I will always appreciate the way his questioning awakened in me a deeper desire to seek, to understand, and to look beyond.
Precious few people influence us through long years of friendship. Sometimes, a person enters our lives for a short time and still changes the direction of our thoughts, our work, or our way of seeing the world. Their presence leaves a profound trace, an imprint, a lasting memory.
Next week, I will be celebrating another powerful person who touched my life in a very different, yet equally profound way. After her celebration of life ceremony, I will continue this reflection and share more about the beautiful influence she had on those around her.
My Invitation
For now, my invitation is simple: Think about the impact you are making on the lives of others.
You may only know someone for a short time. You may share a conversation, a question, a moment of encouragement, or an honest reflection. Yet when you come from a place of honesty, integrity, authenticity, and purity of heart, you never know how deeply your presence may touch another soul.
You may awaken a new way of thinking.
You may offer comfort at just the right moment.
You may inspire someone to look beyond what they believed was possible.
You may become part of the quiet turning point in another person’s journey.
Cherish the Light
Never underestimate the power you hold to influence others when you come from a place of honesty, sincerity, and truth. The energy you carry, the words you speak, the kindness you offer, and the questions you ask may become part of someone else’s story in ways you may never fully realize.
May you cherish each friend who crosses your path, each teacher who awakens something within you, and each soul who reminds you to live with greater presence, purpose, and love.
We never truly know when someone’s earthly journey is complete, and they are called home.
May we always cherish the light they left behind.
Many Blessings on Your Journey,
Lois Hermann
