In the Company of Beloved Kitties

A Holistic Journey of Healing, Harmony & Feline Wisdom

Amid this cold, snowy winter, our beloved furry friends help us stay comfortable, entertained, and loved as we hibernate indoors. This February blog is dedicated to kitty lovers. Where would we be without our cuddly, intuitive feline companions? Cats are spirited little souls on a quiet mission to assist us on our path. They are wise beyond belief… if only we would listen.

After navigating months of unexpected illness, emotional upheaval, and surprising lessons with my own kitties, I felt called to share what I’ve learned — especially since I’ve encountered this situation several times now and, heartbreakingly, lost two cats with similar confusing symptoms in the past.

Mystical Guardians

Cats have long been revered as mystical guardians. Some even say they represent the modern-day expression of Dragons. Look closely at their eyes. Wild cats have round pupils, while domestic cats’ eyes are uniquely slit and deeply expressive. These small but powerful beings serve as spiritual protectors, alerting us to subtle energies in our environment. They are emotional comforters with their warm presence, and physical healers whose vibrational purrs support both their own bodies and ours.

Now, I love dogs… the guardians and protectors of our physical realm… however, I tend to prefer other people’s dogs because they can be a bit high maintenance. I’ve been a confessed “crazy cat lady” most of my life. Cats are generally easy — until the homeostasis is thrown off. At one point, I had a dozen cats, including eight kittens from two mama cats. My experience has been that cats are fairly self-maintaining: food, water, litter box — all set… until something shifts.

Symptoms of Disturbance

So, what happens when one of our little familiars becomes unwell?

We feel it — and often smell it. Cats communicate through changes in behavior, routines, and relationships. An unwell cat is often targeted by more dominant cats, which can lead to territorial marking outside the litter box. In my case, a drenched bowl of fruit on the dining room table got my attention! Instead of getting angry, I learned to pause and ask: What’s really going on here? What are they trying to tell me?

Over the years, I’ve lost several kitty babies — especially outdoor cats — to cars, fisher cats, and coyotes. Several years ago, I vowed to protect my fur babies by keeping them indoors. While this shielded them from external dangers, I eventually discovered something unexpected: domesticated cats can be impacted by our lifestyle.

Since my holistic vet had retired, what follows is the result of a deep dive into holistic problem-solving to assist my precious ones—and their remarkable transformation.

*Disclaimer: Please remember, I’m simply a devoted cat mama sharing what has helped my own kitties to heal naturally. Please follow your intuition to help your fur babies.

1. Water

Cats’ whiskers determine how large their drinking bowls should be. Small bowls cause whisker stress, which discourages drinking. Most cats also prefer running water, making fountains a great option.

That said, many decorative fountains can harbor bacteria that are difficult to remove. I switched to a stainless steel one with an enclosed reservoir, a copper faucet, and double filtration, which is cleaned weekly. Since making this change, hydration has improved noticeably.

2. Food

I’ve long fed them high-quality wet food, using grain-free kibble only as treats. Think of kibble as feeding a child Cheerios all day — convenient yet lacking in complete nutrition.

Dry food can also contribute to dehydration and doesn’t support cats the way moisture-rich, protein-based foods do. Instead of sticking to my regular schedule, feeding them more frequently reduced squabbling, nighttime drama, and territorial stress. Well-nourished cats are calmer cats.

And if they refuse a type of food? Offer another choice. Mine turned their noses up at liver — and honestly, I can’t blame them!

3. Supplements

Just as many of us supplement our diets, cats may need additional nutritional support — especially as they age.

My senior gal began showing signs of renal stress, so I added over-the-counter UTI drops and a renal support chewable that contains cranberry and apple cider vinegar. She devoured them — and within weeks, her stamina, weight, and lovely purr returned.

I’ve also added taurine powder, which is often lacking in commercial food. The difference has been noticeable in all of them. They are playing again. Next on my list: cat-friendly floral essences. I enjoy them… so kitties should too!

4. Litter Boxes

I’ve always followed the “one box per cat” rule, yet when marking began, my cats made it clear where additional boxes were needed — and I listened. I added an extra box and moved the existing ones to the very areas they chose to mark.

We also switched to a less obtrusive, leak-proof box style and committed to daily cleaning — without exception.

5. Clean & Sanitize

Despite keeping a tidy home, lingering odors were a clue that something was missing. Enter the UV flashlight… and OMG — my house looked like a crime scene. Curtains, corners, vents, carpets, and hiding spots all revealed the evidence.

Carpets were removed and either snow-cleaned or sent to a professional cleaner. Since our home is chemical-free, I armed myself with vinegar, Thieves, and occasional doses of Angry Orange to use as needed. All suspected spaces were thoroughly scrubbed — on my hands and knees, just like my mother used to clean. My home has never felt so clean, fresh, and energetically clear.

Once the house was clean, I waited before returning the cleaned carpets… until the kitties showed signs of healing and getting along.

6. Energy Treatments

My ECA team provided energy clearing for all three cats — and for our home. Between a traumatic, noisy re-roofing project and numerous visitors over several months prior to this situation, the energetic environment had clearly shifted.

Cats are incredibly sensitive. My territorial tomcat was attempting to protect our home by showing us there was nasty, lingering energy. In hindsight, he wasn’t misbehaving — he was communicating. Whether one views this as emotional, energetic, or environmental, the results of the clearing were undeniable. Regular clearing maintains a sense of calm and safety for everyone.

7. Biomagnetic Therapy

I personally receive Biomagnetic therapy for past toxic exposure and decided to schedule remote sessions for the cats as well.

The findings were fascinating. Each cat presented with different emotional stressors, EMF exposure, chemical toxins, and parasitic imbalances. The shifts that followed were profound.

If you’re curious, I highly recommend listening to the Inspiring Hope interview with Michele Steele Costa. I truly swear by Biomagnetic therapy — for people and pets.

8. Communicate

Those who share their lives with cats understand the power of communication. Sitting quietly with each one, I reassured them they were safe, loved, and heard.

Animals don’t need explanations — they need presence, consistency, and calm. Each cat had different emotional triggers, some inherited from kittenhood that were exacerbated by the recent situation. Michele’s work helped to identify emotional issues for each one. They had been expressing themselves through marking, withdrawal, aggression, or dramatic vocal protests.

Quietly acknowledging the situation with each cat comforted them, which restored trust and harmony for all.

Peace Resumes

After months of trauma, investigation, and gentle adjustment, our home is once again peaceful, clean, and supportive of everyone’s needs. It is my home — yes — and it is their home, too. They made their needs known, and it was my job to listen.

Everyone is now healthier and happier. They eat and play together and will hopefully sleep together again someday. Time will tell. We are all enjoying a much more peaceful home through this cold winter… till we welcome the fresh beginnings of spring.

Our animals walk beside us as companions, guardians, and teachers. When we honor their voices, we often heal more than we expect.

I hope this helps fellow kitty lovers navigate similar challenges.
