Whose Life Is It Anyway?

Discerning Past-Life Memories and Spirit-Life Connections

As a hypnotist, I have long been fascinated by the mystery of past lives.

My first guided past-life journey took place at the National Guild of Hypnotists many years ago. In that experience, I recalled a simple and beautiful life selling herbs in a small Asian village. My husband and I lived in a tiny cottage where we grew flowers, herbs, and vegetables, then shared our wares with neighbors who used them for health, wellness, and joy.

It was a lovely life. A simple life. A happy life.

That experience opened a doorway of curiosity that has continued for more than thirty years. Since then, I have recalled dozens of lifetimes — some joyful, some sad, some perplexing, and some deeply meaningful. What I have come to understand is that these memories often serve as part of our soul story. They may offer insight into our gifts, our fears, our relationships, our purpose, and the path we are here to walk in this incarnation.

Past-Life Memories

Past-life memories can be fascinating. They can also be healing.

Yet after assisting many clients in exploring past lives, spirit communication, and energy clearing, I have discovered something critically important: Not every memory that surfaces in hypnosis belongs to the client’s soul.

Sometimes, what appears to be a past-life memory may actually be a memory fragment of a spirit connected to the client’s energy field.

This is where discernment becomes essential.

When a client recalls a painful, frightening, or horrific scene, they may naturally assume, “This happened to me? Did I really do that?” If the memory involves violence, betrayal, harm, or wrongdoing, that assumption can create unnecessary guilt, shame, fear, or guardedness. Yet what if the memory is not actually their own? What if it belongs to a spirit presence seeking acknowledgment, healing, or release?

Discernment Matters

A true soul remembrance can help a person understand patterns, relationships, soul lessons, or unfinished emotional threads carried forward into this lifetime. A spirit memory, on the other hand, may belong to someone whose life ended with trauma, confusion, attachment, or unresolved energy. The spirit may be trying to tell its story through the closest sensitive or receptive person available.

Without clear discernment, it can be easy to confuse the two.

Over the years, my work has shown me that many spiritually sensitive people are open to subtle impressions from the unseen realms. They may receive images, emotions, physical sensations, names, scenes, or fragments of stories. In hypnosis, these impressions may become vivid and emotionally charged. The experience may feel very real because, energetically, it is real. The important question is: whose experience is it?

Whose Life Is Being Remembered?

One reason I teach the importance of distinguishing between true past-life remembrance and spirit-life communication is its impact on the living.

Many old souls are drawn to explore the deeper mysteries of existence. They ask questions about why they are here, what they are meant to learn, and how their experiences fit into a larger soul journey. They often feel a natural pull toward healing, service, spiritual awareness, and the unseen dimensions of life.

Younger souls may be more focused on the physical world and the experiences of everyday life. They are often deeply engaged in the adventure of being human, learning through action, emotion, and participation in the material realm as they evolve on this amazing planet Earth.

Neither path is better than the other. Each soul is learning, growing, and evolving in its own way, pace, and time.

The more incarnations a soul has experienced, the more complex its memories, lessons, and spiritual questions may become. Each lifetime may bring resolution to certain soul patterns while opening curiosity in other areas. Past-life exploration can help us recognize recurring themes, recover forgotten strengths, and deepen our compassion for the human journey.

Spirit Life Is Different

When a person completes a life with love, resolution, or spiritual support, they are typically lifted into the light for healing, review, and renewal. Many experience reunion with loved ones, guides, or soul family. From that place, the soul may reflect, heal, and eventually choose its next experience.

However, some souls remain earthbound for a time. This may happen after sudden death, trauma, confusion, fear, attachment, addiction, guilt, or unresolved emotional energy. These spirits may not fully understand that their physical life has ended. Others may feel bound to a person, place, object, or event. Still others vibrate at such a low level based on the harm they have inflicted on others that they become stuck in the unseen realm.

Because they no longer have a physical body to generate energy, they often seek energy from a living host. Sensitive people may feel this as fatigue, heaviness, emotional confusion, intrusive thoughts, unexplained fears, or vivid impressions that don’t seem to belong to them.

In hypnosis or intuitive work, these spirits may come forward spontaneously. Most often, they simply want to share what happened to them. They want someone to hear their story and may seek compassion, release, forgiveness, or help to find the light.

To the untrained practitioner, these impressions can be mistaken for the client’s own past life. To the discerning practitioner, they become a healing opportunity—for both the client and the spirit.

This Is Sacred Work

It requires compassion, clarity, neutrality, and protection. It also requires the practitioner to ask good questions and avoid making assumptions.

Is this the client’s soul memory?

Is this a symbolic story from the subconscious?

Is this a memory fragment from an attached or earthbound spirit?

Is this information healing, helpful, and relevant?

These questions matter because the goal is never drama, fear, or fascination. The goal is truth, healing, clarity, and empowerment.

When we discern the difference between past-life memory and spirit-life communication, we help clients understand their experiences without taking on energy, stories, or burdens that were never truly theirs. We help them realize what truly happened and offer clarity so they can reclaim their own light and peace of mind.

As we help spirits move toward a place of peace, we honor the profound mystery of both souls’ journeys with greater wisdom and care.

So, the next time a memory, image, or impression rises from the depths of hypnosis or meditation, pause before claiming it as your own.

Ask gently: Whose life is it anyway?

The answer may open the door to deeper healing than you ever imagined.
